One Purchase - Two Payments

Common uses for split payments

Why would people want to split payments?

A few common uses include:

Personal

  • Friends or family sharing a purchase.
  • Parents helping a student.

Business

  • Departments using separate budgets.
  • Business partners sharing an expense.

Flexible Payments

  • One customer using two payment methods.
  • Any purchase where a single payment isn't practical.

How Split Payments Work

Using WC Split Payments is straightforward for both the store owner and the customer. Once Split Payment is selected during checkout, the plugin guides the buyer through two independent payments while continuing to use your store's normal WooCommerce payment pages. The following walkthrough shows exactly what customers can expect from beginning to end.

Step 1: Choose Split Payment at Checkout

The customer selects Split Payment during checkout and enters the amount for the first payment.

Block Editor Checkout Page Example

Customers select "Split Payment" alongside your existing payment methods and enter the amount they'd like to pay first. The checkout experience remains familiar because customers continue using WooCommerce's standard payment flow, whether your store uses Classic Checkout or Block Checkout.

When the customer selects the button "Place Order" button, the "parent" order total (including shipping, tax, coupons and giftcards) is stored to be split between two "child" orders. Then it's zeroed out to make sure accounting remains accurate.

Step 2: Complete the First Payment or Share It

The first payment can be completed or shared.

After checkout, the customer is redirected to the first payment page. They can complete the payment immediately or copy the secure payment link and send it to someone else.

Each split payment is its own WooCommerce payment page, so customers can continue using the payment methods your store already accepts.

Step 3: The Remaining Balance Is Ready to Be Paid

First Child Order Thank You Page

After the first payment is complete, the customer is taken to a confirmation page where they can pay the remaining balance or copy a secure payment link to share with someone else.

The second child order isn't created until the first child order is successfully completed.

Payment links can by copied by clicking on the link. Then can be manually pasted into an email, text message or communication method of choice to share with the next payer.

Step 4: Complete the Remaining Balance

The remaining balance is ready to be paid.

The second payment page looks and works just like the first. Complete the remaining balance using any payment method your store already accepts, or share the secure payment link if someone else will be making the final payment.

Step 5: The Purchase Is Complete.  Yay!

Order Complete

Once both payments are received, the original order is automatically updated.

The parent order is moved to your store's normal WooCommerce order status, such as Processing, On Hold, or Completed, based on your existing store settings. From that point forward, the order behaves just like any other WooCommerce order..

Easy to Manage in WooCommerce

While customers enjoy a simple payment experience, store owners continue managing orders using familiar WooCommerce screens. Split payments are easy to identify, easy to navigate, and remain organized throughout the order lifecycle.

  • Parent and child orders are clearly identified at a glance.
  • Navigate between related orders with a single click.
  • Split payments remain organized alongside your normal WooCommerce orders.
  • Helpful management tools make it easy to track every payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WC Split Payments replace my payment gateway?

No. WC Split Payments works with the payment methods your store already accepts. Each payment is completed using WooCommerce's standard payment pages.

Can two different people pay for the same order?

Yes. After the first payment, a secure payment link can be shared with another person to complete the remaining balance.

Can one customer use two different payment methods?

Yes. The same customer can complete both payments using different cards or other payment methods supported by your store.

How many payments can an order be split into?

The current beta release supports splitting an order into two independent payments.

Will this change my normal WooCommerce order process?

No. Once both payments have been completed, the original order continues through your normal WooCommerce workflow using your existing order status settings.

Does it work with HPOS?

Yes. The plugin supports both High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) and Legacy Order Storage.

What if my checkout has been heavily customized?

We're actively looking for beta testers with customized checkout experiences. If you encounter a compatibility issue, we'll work with you to resolve it before the public release.

What will the plugin cost when it's released?

Pricing has not been finalized. Our current focus is building a reliable, well-tested plugin with feedback from real WooCommerce stores. One option we're considering is offering the current, core functionality for free while making advanced features available in a future Pro version. Final pricing and licensing decisions will be made after the beta program is complete.

Does WC Split Payments work with deposit or partial-payment plugins?

WC Split Payments may work with some WooCommerce deposit or partial-payment plugins, but this has not been fully tested yet. Because each split payment is handled as its own WooCommerce child order, compatibility will depend on how the deposit plugin modifies order totals, order statuses, and the /order-pay/ page. This is exactly the kind of real-world setup we are hoping to test during beta.

Does WC Split Payments work with subscriptions?

Subscriptions are not currently part of the beta scope. WC Split Payments is focused on one-time WooCommerce purchases. Subscription compatibility may be explored later, but recurring billing introduces additional payment-token and renewal-order considerations that need separate testing.

What happens if I cancel one of the split payment orders?

If either the parent order or one of its child orders is cancelled, the plugin automatically cancels all related split payment orders. This helps keep the order group synchronized and prevents situations where part of a split payment remains active after the rest of the transaction has been cancelled.

What happens if I refund one of the split payment orders?

Refunds are handled independently for each child order. Refunding one child order does not automatically refund the other child order or cancel the parent order. Depending on your business process, you may need to manually refund the remaining child order (if it has been paid) and manually update the statuses of the related orders as appropriate.

In many cases, after completing any necessary refunds, cancelling one of the related orders is the quickest way to automatically cancel the remaining orders in the split payment group.

Help Shape the First Release
